Alan Martinez

Alan Martinez is the Director of the Impact Investing Initiative at Root Cause. The initiative aims to build a stronger impact investing community by strengthening the capacity of impact-driven entrepreneurs and helping to catalyze investments in businesses committed to positive social and environmental impact. Alan has spent his career championing increased access to finance for underserved entrepreneurs in the US and abroad. He recently completed training and consulting assignments for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the World Bank, the African Guarantee Fund, and Innovations for Poverty Action.  He began his career as a lender to small businesses at ShoreBank, the first community development financial institution in the country. He then built a wealth of experience working as an advisor to impact-driven investors, donors and financial institutions in over 29 countries. As a senior manager at ShoreBank International he oversaw more than $280 million in financing programs delivering debt and risk capital financing to more than 9,000 enterprises and has led advisory projects to address financing and capacity building needs in community development, small business, microenterprise, affordable housing, renewable energy, energy efficiency and agriculture. He earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of Texas and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University.
